A 501(c)(3) nonprofit — Southern California

Redefining urban agriculture
for the food insecure.

SFUA is a Southern California nonprofit working to realign the urban food chain with innovative agricultural models. Driven by the goal to bring an end to nutrition insecurity throughout our region, we explore and build new, dynamic collaborations with farms, schools, cities, and distribution partners.

Where we work

We work across Orange, Los Angeles, and Riverside Counties, building edible landscapes in urban environments where land, resources and access appear constrained and scarce.

Our model brings together farms, schools, cities, food banks and distribution entities together in new partnerships that combine competencies, infrastructure and resources.

This strategy allows us to approach each community project with nimble, creative vision.

What We Do

Our programs

Our work connects food production, education, and distribution into a single, practical system.

Farms grow food, students and communities engage with agriculture, and that food moves through trusted distribution partners into communities across the region.

These efforts are interconnected, with each one strengthening the others and expanding access to fresh, locally grown food for communities facing nutrition insecurity.

Our Origin

How this work began

SFUA began with a simple observation: fresh, high-quality produce was largely absent from the systems serving many communities.

Founder AG Kawamura set out to change that by working directly with farms and distribution partners to move locally grown food into existing channels. What started as a focused effort has grown into a broader model that connects production, education, and distribution across Southern California.

Who We Are

Our mission

We started by making sure farm fresh produce reached people instead of being left in the field or worked back into the soil.

From there, we expanded into farming underused land, restoring productive farmland, and building farm to food bank partnerships.

Reducing food waste and expanding access to nutritious food has always driven our work.
